Advice and information

The Welfare Advice and Information Project

We provide the following for Somali refugees and the wider community:

  • a general welfare, advice and information support service
  • interpretation and translation services

These services are available on a regular basis four days per week (Monday to Thursday, 10 am - 4 pm). The London Borough of Ealing supports through funding and outreach advisors.

DSS And Housing Benefit Surgeries:

A very important part of the welfare advice and information project is the contribution of the local DSS office and Ealing Council's Housing Benefit Section. Both these agencies run advice surgeries at this centre on regular basis. The services they provide benefits not only Somali women but also many other people from the local community come to the centre for help and advice.

Housing

Adequate housing and homelessness are major problems for Somali families in West London. The single people suffer most. Bed and breakfast and other temporary accommodation are the norm for those who are offered accommodation. Temporary accommodation can be for over 18 months or even longer.

SWRC has worked with local housing associations to provide decent dwellings for the single homeless. So far, Acton Housing Association has provided decent accommodation for single homeless Somali refugees in Ealing. We seek to enlist the support of other housing associations in the area for similar help.
