Past projects

In the past we have run several projects including:

  • The Somali Senior Citizen Club: this was a section of the Somali Women's Refugee Centre. It ran from 1993 until 1997 with the support of the local Age Concern.  The project was held at the Priory Community Centre and provided hot meals and drinks for the elderly and disabled.  SWRC provided managerial and administrative support to the club, while volunteers assisted in preparing meals. The help and support this Project provided was crucial to the welfare and health care of those clients. The Project was closed due to lack of funding. SWRC feels this was a worthwhile Project.

  • Supplementary School Project:  this took place every Saturday and Sunday at the Priory Community Centre.  The aim of the classes was two fold: firstly to assist young people with their school work; secondly to teach mother-tongue language, cultural/traditional customs and religious activities. For those Somali children born in the UK knowing about their country of origin and cultural background is very important for their development and schooling.

We may run similar projects in the future if funding is available.
